Waste & Recycling Information

Complaints or enquiries can be made to LCC's Customer Services on

We use a mix of bins, bags, and recycling boxes to deal with waste in our area. Here’s what you need to know:

Wheeled Bins

There are 3 sizes of wheeled bins: 140L, great if you’re tight on space; 240L, the standard size; and 1100L, for shared use (like in flats). If your bin gets damaged or goes missing, just let Lincoln City Council know; they’ll soon sort out a repair or replacement for you. You can ask to switch to smaller/larger bins, or swap to the bag system if it suits you better.

Bag System

If you use the bag system you’ll get:

  • 3 purple sacks a week for your rubbish (Only these official ones will get collected.)

  • A 55L black box for recycling (glass should go in here if possible)

Clear bin bags can also be used for recycling but you will need to buy these. (Black bin bags or any other bags will not be taken.)

What Goes Where?

If there’s the wrong stuff inside, your bags or bins won’t be collected or emptied until you sort it!

Black bin/Purple sacks: Everyday household rubbish only.
❌    Furniture, large bulky items, electricals, batteries, DIY bits, or garden waste.

❌    Extra rubbish bags left next to black bins won’t be taken.

Brown bin/Clear recycling bags/Black recycling box: Clean recycling only.
Textiles, soft toys, polystyrene, or wood.

✅    Please rinse stuff out and don’t mix rubbish with recycling.

✅    You can put out as much recycling as you like; just make sure it’s in  clear bin bags or your black recycling box, and safe to handle.

Green bin: Garden waste only.
🌿 Grass, leaves, branches, that sort of thing.

❌    Extra rubbish bags left next to green bins won’t be taken either.

(There’s a £40 annual fee if you want one of these, and you apply here:

www.lincoln.gov.uk/online/pay-garden-waste-collections)

🚫 Overloaded bins?

Make sure your bin lids close properly. If it’s too full or jammed, it might not be collected until you sort it. Its fine to squish things down a bit, just don’t pack it so tight it gets stuck.

🗓 Collection Days

Yarborough Road: Thursday

Everywhere else in the HUHRA area: Wednesday

Rubbish: every week

Recycling & Green waste: every 2 weeks

Only put your bins or bags out the night before or early morning, and please try not to block the pavement. Bring your bins, or any uncollected bags, back in the same day (or the next at the latest).

If you need help moving your rubbish & recycling ask for an Assisted Collection here: www.lincoln.gov.uk/online/apply-assisted-waste-collection

If there’s a problem...

Lincoln City Council will try to help you fix it, but if the same issue keeps happening, here’s what they’ll do:

  1. Tag your bin & a letter or a visit

  2. Send you an Advice Notice & visit again

  3. Warning Notice & legal action if nothing changes.

Remember you can ask to switch to smaller/larger bins or swap to purple sacks if it suits you better.

Collection of large or bulky items

If you can’t get to a Household Waste Recycling Centre, the City of Lincoln Council can collect bulky items for you. There’s a charge for the service, but it’s free if you qualify for support. Find out more or book a collection here: www.lincoln.gov.uk/bins-recycling/bins-recycling-waste/2
