Pests such as rats are always present in urban areas. As they are attracted to the smells of rubbish and food waste, bagged waste and wheeled bins should not be placed on the street for long periods of time. Rats carry a number of nasty diseases that can be spread to people through their urine, droppings, and fleas.

To reduce the risk of rats affecting your household:

  • Keep alleyways, yards, gardens and pavements free of food waste, litter, filled bin bags, and old furniture.

  • If you use a wheeled bin place all rubbish in your bins, making sure the lids can still close to stop rats getting in. The rubbish should also be bagged.

  • If you are on the bag system please use a black bin to store your waste, as rats will chew through bin bags. These bins are available in most DIY stores.

  • Ensure your refuse and recycling is taken weekly so that it does not accumulate.

  • Only place your bins or bagged rubbish on the street on Tuesday night, or Wednesday morning before 7am.

  • Bring your bins back off the street either on the day of collection or the following day, or you could face enforcement action from Lincoln County Council.
