Lincoln Pleasure Fair early 1860’s

Orchard Street used to host Lincoln’s Pleasure Fair. If you look carefully at the top left hand side you can see the line roman wall which went all the way down to the river. Today only traces of the wall are left, and the site of the fair is now Lincoln City Council Offices.

Yarborough Road in the early 1890’s.

Did you know that in 1871 Yarborough Road was called New Burton Road?

Flower Show in 1911

This photo was taken in what is now the Beer Garden of The Joiners Arms. The couple standing at the back on the far left were the landlords at the time.

Magnificent 1940’s Motorbike

This photo of the very proud motorcyclist was taken on Alexandra Terrace in the early 1940’s. Look at the shine on his boots!

Pigs On Parade 1950

Don Oswin of 38a Yarborough Road as a bit short on space. So he used to exercise his pigs by taking them for regular walks around the neighbourhood. This photo, taken on 11th May 1950, shows prize winning boar Chapel Resolution 19th on one of his evening walks along Alexandra Terrace. As you can see it drew quite a crowd!

View down Victoria Street 1965

As you can see 46 Victoria Terrace was still a corner shop, and you can just make out the sign for The Joiners Arms!

St Martin’s Church late 1960’s

View of the second St Martin’s Church which was re-built in 1873 on the corner of West Parade and Orchard Street. The Church was later demolished in 1970 despite community protests.

The Burton Arms late 1960’s

Run as a grocery and bakers for 20 years by Richard and Emma Burton they finally gained a beer years licence in 1903. Sadly the pub shut in 2013 and is now a branch of Pizza Hut.

Demolition of Beaumont Place and Providence Row in 1972

Taken on the corner of Beaumont Fee and West Parade this photo shows the initial groundworks for the building of Lincoln Police Station, which was later known locally as Ryvita House.

Queen’s silver Jubilee 1977

The entire community tuned out to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee on Victoria Street.
